When the word cancer comes up in any conversation everyone seems to stop, nothing really noticeable but everyone feels it. When that word applies to someone you know and love it’s like an atomic bomb going off in your head.
My name is Lily and this is my Dad, Adam Earl Peet. He’s 45 and has been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx and thank God it hasn’t spread anywhere else yet. The doctor’s want to hit It hard with 6 weeks of radiation, every day and chemotherapy every three weeks.
I know my Dad has a hard road ahead of him but he’s tough and he will survive.
My Dad has always taken care of me! When my parents broke up and my Mom left, my Dad was always my rock. Don’t get me wrong, my Mom was always there for me but going “home” meant going with Dad. After graduating high school I got a job and we, Dad and me decided to move closer to work so we could save money to eventually buy a home, something permanent. That dream will have to wait.
When Dad first got sick he went to his place of work with papers to be put on medical leave, he was told he would be better off financially if they laid him off, so they laid him off. Now he doesn’t qualify for unemployment because he is not “able” to work. He’s applied for Social Security Disability but we’ve been told that’s almost impossible to get and even if he gets it, it will take a long time to get it started.
We don’t like asking for help but right now we could sure use some.
My Dad walked me down the isle a couple of weeks ago to marry the love of my life; we are living with my Dad. She is just as committed to helping him fight this battle as I am. We are confident that we can help him through the rough times ahead by being here for him. We have gone from three incomes down to one. As I have also lost my job and unemployment is as many know very unreliable right now. The gas to go back and forth to the doctors and hospital for treatment plus his medications are adding up fast. Then comes his share of the rent, utilities, food, his car payment and car insurance only add to the struggle. Sometimes it all gets overwhelming but then I remember our goal – to get Dad well!
With your help and God’s grace, we will get thru this. Next year we will be reading through go fund me pages to see who we can help, and we will. We are asking those of you who can, please help us out, any amount will be so appreciated.
