As some of you know, the sweetest eight-year-old in the world, Adam went through emergency brain surgery to remove a tumor last week. Here is his story in his mother's words:
"Last week our world changed. On Monday I took Adam for his annual eye appointment. The Dr noticed some swelling on the optic nerves and sent us to the ER for an MRI. Monday night we had a rapid MRI done and a mass was found. We were admitted to Lurie's overnight to await a full MRI. Brian joined us and we waited. He had his full MRI on Tuesday and they found 1 large (ping pong ball) tumor and several little ones. Along with a massive amount of spinal fluid backed up causing massive pressure on his brain. Surgery was scheduled for the next morning. On Wednesday he went through surgery and it was found that the tumor was more small baseball sized. They removed the majority of it, some too close to vital areas to touch. And installed a drain to help reduce the spinal fluid build-up. Today they are removing that drain and installing a shunt to continue to help the fluid drain correctly as his brain is unable to do it on its own. We are still awaiting reports to find out what type of tumor it was and what the next possible steps are in regard to the smaller tumors. Next week Adam goes back to the hospital for a port insertion and to start weekly low-dose chemo for the next 3 months. At that point, he'll have another MRI to see if he goes to maintenance or if they need to readdress the situation."
As you can imagine this has hit the family hard, and Adam will need full-time care to get through the next couple of months. Funds raised will be used to help offset medical costs and cover expenses so the family can focus on Adam during his treatments.
