Subject: Please help me save my husband

My husband is a 36 year old, active, fit healthy family man. We have 3 beautiful children and this is our story.

*Last thursday(Sept 2) Adam was not feeling well and went to care now in hermitage, tn. He tested positive for covid and was told he should go to the er and be put on a ventilator. He was offered no medication and came home.

*Friday morning(Sept 3) after not being able to breathe all night I called care now to speak to the dr. They took a message and as of today(Sept 5) have still not returned my call. I took Adam to the Summit ER in Mt Juliet. They immediately came out and told me he needed to be admitted and I couldnt see him. I went home to pack him a bag. They were talking nonstop about intubation while we waited for a hospital bed to be available. Adam and I both expressed in no uncertain terms that we do not consent to that. Due to our vehement refusal they allowed me to come back to the room so they could try to talk me into in with him. We continued to express our refusal. Eventually he was transferred by ambulance to the summit er in hermitage. I have not been allowed to see him since.

*Sept 4 I called the icu at 300 am and spoke to Jamie about my husband. She was kind but also told me she couldnt help but think if he had gotten the vaccine that he wouldnt be there. She also told me that he would probably need a ventilator at some point and chances were not good after that.

I called later that day for an update and got his day nurse Lindsay. I requested high dose vit c and zinc iv fluids. She told me he was given an oral vit and multivitamin and that iv vitamins was not a thing and didnt exist. She also told me he could not have any food or drink because of risk of aspiration and that an iv fir fluids wasnt protocol so ge couldnt have that either despite my request for it. She also told me he was being given pain meds.

I called at 745 that evening to speak to the night shift. They took a message for his nurse who never returned my call.

*Sept 5 I called 445 am and they tried to take a message again. I refused and said no I need to talk to someone because my last message wasnt returned. They told me he was given a sedative and pain meds. His is texting me nonsense so I know he is not coherent and cannot make his own medical decisions. I have repeatedly told the nurses I have medical power of attorney but have not been consulted once on his care. I requested high dose vit c if and was told a dr would have to prescribe it. I was told Dr Smith would see him around 8 or 9 and I could call and speak to him. I called at 830 and he had not arrived so I had them leave a message for him to call. At this time I tried to call to get a patient advocate and no one answered the phone. I called at 1015 to see if the dr was in. Joanna answered and told me he had seen my husband but was with another patient. At 130 I called the nurse supervisor for the hospital, Kendall and I vented my concerns for mixed information, no adherence to the care plan I keep requesting and no food or drink for my husband. He has texted me multiple times that he has no water or Sprite. She was very caring and said she would address my concerns. At 340 Dr Smith called me. He immediately wanted to discuss intubation. I said absolutely not. He said Adam's o2 levels are steady but he looks worse today so I think we should discuss that. I said you havent fed him or given him water or fluids in 3 days and his body is fighting a virus!!! I said why cant he have water? The dr told me oh he has water. I said no he doesnt, the nurses told me he cant have any. I said why cant he eat? He said because he cant tolerate the bipap being off. I said my husband said he can go 8 minutes without it on. That's plenty of time to eat. He said oh ya I guess, I'll order him food. Then I asked about the anxiety meds and he said they were giving it to him. I said does he know you're giving him that? He said um, uh we dont ask for consent for routine meds. I said patient rights say you have to run EVERYTHING by the patient. At that point he tried to end the conversation but I didnt allow him to. I reiterated that intubation is NOT an option and that I have medical power of attorney and know my husbands wishes. I also repeated several times that he is to be fed and given water.

I tried several more time to contact the nurse supervisor this afternoon to discuss a care plan but was sent straight to voicemail. I called to speak to Leslie his day nurse around 5 and was told she was busy. I asked if he was given dinner, they told me yes it was ordered I see the tray. I said did he eat it? And she didnt know and said to call back to talk to Leslie in 5 minutes. I asked if she could provide me with an email to send a copy of the power of attorney paperwork to. She put me on hold for over 5 minutes only to tell me no, there was no email to send it to. I called back about 10 minutes later and spoke to Leslie. She told me Adam had requested adovan and hydrocodone and that she had been given orders for him to be on a liquid diet. She had given him a can of ensure. I asked if she could set that up every few hours and she said that would not be a problem. She also could not provide an email but did make a not on his chart that I have medical power of attorney.

I have had no contact with my husband all afternoon because he is being kept too incoherent to text me. I am very concerned for his well being.

I want to bring him home on home health orders with a bipap machine and oxygen and I want actual medical treatment with covid meds. He is not going on a ventilator. I need help to get this set up asap and get him out of there before they take it upon themselves to intubate him and say it was an emergency. Please help me!!!

Thank you for hearing my story,
