Send Adaklu Students to College

Hello! Hola! It's Diana and Emily and as you might already know we are currently teaching in Adaklu Helekpe, Ghana. We are also working with the Adaklu Youth Education Committee (AYEC), which was founded in 2000 in partnership with the US Peace Corps, with the primary goal of advancing the educational and vocational opportunities available to young people in the Adaklu area of the Volta Region, Ghana.

In previous years, AYEC has worked to give scholarships to 10 students a year to go to high school. However, a high school education is not enough to break the cycle of poverty or allow the students to get well-paying jobs. Therefore, this year, AYEC is trying to raise money to pay for three students to start university, and we are trying to help. The students that are selected are "brilliant but needy," meaning that, although they are very bright and willing to work hard, they do not have the financial resources to pursue higher education. Because we have both received scholarships to attend Notre Dame, we think it’s only fair for us to try to give this same opportunity to the students from Adaklu.

After graduation, as soon as the students find a job, they will start donating back to the scholarship fund so that more graduating students can go to university, making the system sustainable. Unlike most nonprofits or NGOs, which have to pay administration fees and salaries, 100% of the money raised will go directly to paying for the school fees of the three students.
