Please support my 8th grade fundraising project to purchase new toys and a scale for the dolphins in residence at the Dolphin Plus Marine Mammal Responder organization in Key Largo.

Dolphins are mammals and considered one of the world's most intelligent animals. Scientists learn a lot about other animals through their communication and interaction. They are important to the environment, because they can tell us about the health of our oceans. As predators, they consume several different types of fish and squid. If there are toxins in the water, they digest them through their diet and become sick. Therefore, monitoring dolphins and the levels of contaminants in their bodies help scientists to preserve our oceans. Additionally scientist can predict climate change and available food supply by tracking dolphin migration.

The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric Science partnered with Dolphin Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR) in Key Largo to advance dolphin care, conversation, and research. They are working together to develop a greater understanding of marine mammal biology, behavior, and physiology which will provide valuable information to scientists world-wide.

DPMMR is non-profit organization whose mission is committed to the conservation and protection of marine mammals, worldwide, through the organizations active involvement in conservation, research, extensive education, and outreach programs. DPMMR leads and operates the only whale and dolphin stranding organization covering 10,000 square miles of marine habitat in the Florida Keys. Over the last thirty years, the organization has rescued over 640 whales and dolphins in distress.

Their goal is to connect people with dolphins and inspire them to protect the fragile marine environment. Through educational classes and dolphin experiences, residents of South Florida and tourists gain a deep appreciation for dolphins. The hope is that through these interactions, people become more knowledgeable about how to protect our oceans from pollution, over fishing, and climate change.

My group and I  visited the DPMMR and asked how we could help. There are seven dolphins currently at the facility that require 24 hour care, 7 days a week. They are in need of new toys to stimulate and train the dolphins and also a scale to weigh them since theirs was broken during Hurricane Irma.

Thank you for helping us and the dolphins and supporting marine research!
