I am 28 years old and I live and work in Windsor Ontario Canada. I live with my amazing boyfriend Ace of 7 years and my two beautiful step daughters, twin girls Alanna and Alyssa who just turned 12.
My pepe Aurel passed away February 24th, 2014 from non hodgkin's lymphoma. He worked at Ford for 36 years and retired in 2000.
When I found out just how sick my pepe really was, I felt like my world was caving in on me. From that day on, I did not want to leave my pepe's side. I did not know how much time I had left with him and I wanted every minute I could have with him.
It was the hardest thing to watch him fight with the cancer. Each day I visitied him never knowing what I was going to walk in to. Some days he was awake and alert and even feeding himself. Other days he was asleep and needed help to eat and drink. No matter how sick he was feeling, his family was always his main concern.
Shortly after my pepe's passing, my meme found a lump in her left breast. It was soon diagnosed as breast cancer. After numourous bouts of cancer treatments, the tumour had shrunk and she had a mastectomy and is on the mend.
The last few years have really opened my eyes to how big of an issue cancer really is. It is everywhere! It not only affects the person with the cancer but their families as well.
My last haircut, which really was only a trim, was just days before my pepe's funeral. My sister Amanda made the appointment because she knew I would not do it. I have been growing my hair for quite sometime due to a short hair cut I had gotten in grade school. That short hair cut was not a fit for me and ever since I have not been able to cut much of my hair off.
At the end of February 2016, I will be donating 6-10 inches of my hair. Once my hair is cut it will be sent to A Child's Voice Foundation in Mississauga, a place that will make the hair into a wig for children.
A portion of the money we raise this month will be donated to the Windsor Essex County Cancer Foundation. This foundation is community based and is volunteer-led.
The other portion of the money we raise this month will be given to a local family in need who is fighting cancer.
These donations are needed immediately. Cancer patients and their familes need our help . Not many of us have benifits and need help with paying for things like perscription medications needed for treatments. Any amount you can spare would be greatly appreciated! Lets help those who are fighting cancer by passing on some positive vibes and show them that we all care and stand behind them in their fight!
I hope that my pepe will provide me the extra pep of courage I will be needing when I get in that chair to cut my hair. I am doing this for him, my meme and anyone and everyone else out there who is fighting cancer.
