Justice for Bella – Help Us Fight for Accountability
Bella is more than just a pet—she’s family. A gentle, loving dog who has been by my side for years. But due to misleading information from veterinary specialists, she has suffered an unnecessary and life-altering amputation. Now, we are fighting to hold them accountable.
How This Happened
Bella developed a lump on her back leg, and I took her to my local vet, who performed a biopsy. When the results came back, I was referred to a specialist oncologist for further clarification and the best possible treatment. The oncologist reviewed the pathology report and told me outright: “She’s got cancer.”
In the same appointment, Bella was taken to consult with two specialist soft tissue surgeons. I was informed that, due to the lump’s location, it was not possible to remove it with a sufficient margin without amputating her entire leg. I made it absolutely clear that I would only agree to amputation if it was the only way to save her life. I was assured that this was necessary to remove the cancer and that surgery was the only option.
We were never told that the cancer diagnosis was not confirmed. The original pathology report from our local vet only stated that cancer was suspected, not definitive—but this was not explained to us. Instead, we were led to believe that amputation was the only course of action.
So, trusting the expertise of veterinary specialists, we made the agonizing decision to proceed with surgery. One week later, we received devastating news: Bella never had cancer. Further pathology confirmed that the lump was benign.
If we had been fully informed of the uncertainty in Bella’s diagnosis, we would never have put her through such a life-changing and unnecessary procedure.
Bella’s Suffering
Now, Bella has been left disabled, with a reduced quality of life. She has pemphigus, an autoimmune skin condition, and we were not informed before the operation that she would have to stop her medication. This caused a severe flare-up, leading to painful, cracked paw pads and widespread skin inflammation.
She now suffers from phantom limb pain, requiring monthly injections and daily pain-blocking medication. She can no longer play with her sister or join her on long walks—things that once brought her so much joy.
Fighting for Justice
For the past ¾ of a year, we have done everything possible to resolve this through the correct channels. We have gone back and forth with the veterinary specialists and their corporate medical insurer, seeking nothing more than reimbursement for the cost of the unnecessary operation—just so we could cover Bella’s ongoing and spiraling medical expenses.
Despite our efforts, they have refused to take responsibility, leaving us with no option but to take legal action. We are now fundraising to start legal proceedings against the specialist practice, taking on a large corporate entity to get justice for Bella.
This is not just about Bella—it’s about ensuring that no other pet owner has to suffer the same devastating consequences of an incomplete and misleading diagnosis. Owners should always be given all the information necessary to make an informed decision about their pet’s health.
We never wanted a legal battle. We only requested reimbursement for the cost of the unnecessary operation, despite believing we are entitled to more, because our priority has always been Bella’s well-being. We wanted a swift resolution so we could focus on her ongoing medical care following this devastating amputation.
