Action for the Arctic: BIG ACE 2025

Hi, my name is Kate Larkin and I am delighted to have you onboard!

I am thrilled to announce I was an Ambassador for the Bears, Ice and Glaciers Arctic Climate Expedition (BIG ACE) 2025 expedition, to Svalbard (Spitsbergen) which took place between 24 June - 5 July 2025.

On BIG ACE 2025 I joined changemakers from across the world to shine a light on climate change in the Arctic which is on the front-line, warming 4-5 times faster than any other place on the Planet. In fact Svalbard (Spitsbergen), which was our focus, is warming even faster. Temperatures in the high North at 81N latitude were at least 5C warmer than normal and some days we hit 10C. No wonder the pack ice (sea ice) is melting and retreating faster than ever. Climate change is already having devastating consequences on melting sea ice and glaciers, habitat destruction for Arctic wildlife, species re-distribution and loss of biodiversity, from phytoplankton and zooplankton at the base of the Arctic food chain to apex predators the polar bear. The problem is not only local - what happens in the Arctic affects us all as it plays a critical role in regulating our climate. On BIG ACE 2025 I will join scientists, musicians, artists, communicators and many other experts to collectively observe impacts on Arctic wildlife – from ‍‍❄️polar bears to arctic terns - and fragile ecosystems on land and at sea in the context of global ocean and climate change. We will use scientific data , the arts , music and communication to galvanize global awareness, engage and drive individual and collective action.

I took time out of my professional job for this expedition as there is overwhelming evidence that climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are existential threats to all life on our Planet - from Arctic wildlife to humans and everything in between. There is a small window of time (literally a few years) when we can still change the trajectory of the Arctic and get back on course before melting, loss of ice and albedo and everything that comes with it becomes irreversible.

I am asking for your help to support my efforts as I am on a mission to engage as many citizens in meaningful ways as possible on-board and post-expedition.

Because climate change is real. The best time to act was yesterday. The second best time to act is now.
