My name is Erin and I am campaigning to raise money for my dear friend Nikki Rice and her husband Josh. This campaign is to help them with expenses they have during this difficult time.
Their Story:
Josh and Nikki have been together for 10 years and were so excited that they were pregnant again!
They went in for their 20 week ultrasound and got some news that was very upsetting but at the same time a blessing to find early. Nikki was diagnosed with Velamentous Cord Insertion, low lying Placenta and Vasa Previa, a rare condition with only 1 in 2500 births.
These are very serious complications. To simply explain, a Velamentous Cord Insertion and Vasa Previa are pregnancy complications in which the umbilical cord is abnormally inserted into the placenta and blood vessels run close to the inner part of the cervix. Due to this, baby’s blood vessels are unprotected by Wharton’s Jelly and no longer tucked inside the umbilical cord. Instead, they are low lying running next to or over the cervix.
Luckily the ultrasound tech caught this problem and there is a 97% success rate as long as it’s caught early.
The treatment is to be admitted to the hospital at 30-32 weeks and deliver between 34-36 via C-section.
Nikki has been at the University of Minnesota/Masonic Children’s Hospital since April 25th. A total of 4 weeks as an inpatient and ended up having an emergency C-Section.
Adeline Esme made her grand entrance on the morning of May 23rd and only weighed 3 lbs 14 oz and went directly to the NICU after she was born and has been there since. She is currently 10 days old and may be small but she is mighty and strong!
Nikki has not been able to work since February and Josh had been off work due to having shoulder surgery right before Nikki was admitted to the hospital. He has been taking care of things at home and driving back and forth (200 miles each way!) to spend as much time as he can down in the cities with Adeline and Nikki. This has been really hard emotionally and physically, as well, as hard on their finances. For this reason, I am reaching out to friends family, and really anyone who is willing to help them on their journey.
