Act Now: A Single Mom Fighting for Her Life

Thank you all so much for contributing to help Kimberly purchase her car. Thankfully, she has found a vehicle which has been a huge help. We still need to raise funds to help her cover past-due child support, legal fees, & secure an attorney.

Since her separation in 2017, Kimberly has faced unrelenting challenges. Despite 16 years of marriage, she was left with no alimony and ordered to pay child support (even though her ex-husband’s income is seven times hers). She had no access to their marital money and no funds for an attorney during that almost 3 year long custody battle meant to strip her of everything. 

In April, her ex filed for willful contempt over past-due payments for child support. In fear of going to jail, Kimberly drained her emergency savings, sold off belongings, and held fundraisers to try to catch up. Despite all this, she was still short of the total back child support she still owed.

Kimberly's situation worsened when a judge found her in willful contempt over less than $2,000 in past-due child support and medical bills, despite her ex admitting in court that he wasn’t facing any financial hardship from the delay and Kimberly offering to agree on a reasonable payment plan. Now, she must pay off this debt within the next 3 months and pay her ex’s legal fees by March, or face 30 days in jail. Given her loss of income, the debt is insurmountable and she is facing the very real threat of jail without our help.

The most pressing needs are to raise enough funds to keep her out of jail ($1.00) and hire an attorney to help her appeal the court judgements ($3,000).

These are critical needs, as without them, her situation will only worsen. Any contribution—no matter how small—will go directly toward helping her purchase a car, protect herself and get back on her feet.

Kimberly has endured years of abusive power and coercive control and needs as many people as possible standing with her. It will truly take a village to help her overcome the many obstacles she faces.
