We are raising money for the ACSA science classroom, and science supplies for citizen science projects for 2025-2026.

Right now, the science classroom only has desks and chairs. To support a broader experiential model, where students are able to engage in a variety of station activities within the same room (quiet reading and annotation; problem solving; peer discussion; idea brainstorming; science writing), we want to create a "nook" in the back of the room with furniture arranged in a semicircle. This gives a designated space for certain activities, and will give a more inviting atmosphere to the otherwise laboratory feel of the science room. This will also help support our Math 5 class, which is a standards-based course that also uses problem-solving stations and IXL to support students (and will be located in the science room).

With our school district budget cut and Alaska Governor Dunleavy's cut to the bipartisan base student allocation (BSA) increase, we also have no money for any science supplies. This year, I hope to engage students in real-world research with local scientists and experts. As part of some of those wildlife centered projects, we hope to set up trail cameras to study local animals. As part of another project, we will study weather patterns and how they might impact local wildlife. A weather station at the school not only gives direct feedback on weather on-site, but also teaches students about the various components to weather as well as will link to the global Weather Underground system - meaning anyone, anywhere will be able to look at Nome's weather and find the "ACSA" weather station!
