Hello,
My name is Drew Jensen and I am a science teacher and VEX robotics coach at Lincoln Jr/Sr High School in Alma Center, Wisconsin. My school is a smaller, rural school with a total student population of about 250 from 7th grade to 12th grade, along with more than half of the students' families being low income.
Vex robotics started here just a couple years ago at the middle school level. The first year was more exploratory, but the second year the students had such drive and passion that they excelled in competitions at the local and state level and were invited to the World Robotics Competition which was unfortunately cancelled due to covid.
This year, those middle schoolers are now in 9th grade and many are excited to get back into competing and want to get to the world competition again. They have also inspired others to join to the point where we have grown from 7 students last year to 20 students between the middle and high school levels this year.
I took over this year after the previous coach changed to a different school and I knew these kids needed to keep things going. I have been able to get some grants for 2 robots at the high school level and had some money left over from last year to purchase initial field and game supplies for the current season along with paying for registration. However, what is left won't help us through the rest of the season. We have some money to pay for individual competitions, but we could still use more to participate in several competitions. We will also need some money to either buy supplies to build a barrier around the field (about $100) or to purchase the regulation barrier the vex company sells ($800). Either style will be required this year for virtual competitions, but the regulation barrier would be excellent for future years so our school could host competitions and raise money for ourselves. Our final purchase would be some storage bins/ tool boxes to keep the equipment and parts organized, clean, and easily accessible for this year and future years to come.
I appreciate your consideration to help our team start strong and to reach a level of self-reliance where we could build our own funds each year. Any money beyond our goal would be beneficial for additional competitions or for buying parts to further add to the field for holding competitions. This is a great opportunity to help the students explore passions in the STEM field in designing robotics and programming, along with building skills in teamwork, communication, problem solving, and critical thinking. We also believe this program will encourage students to pursue careers in fields of science, technology, or trades where they are working hands on and solving real-life problems. Thank you for your time and any money you may decide to donate.
Sincerely,
The ACHM VEX Robotics Team
