Aaron Carey was born on July 31, 1972 and was raised on the Southern Shore in a small town called Witless Bay a.k.a. God’s Country to Aaron. Regretfully, on November 21, 2020, Aaron succumbed to his third battle with cancer in his short 48 years with us. Although his time with us was short, it was certainly impactful, with a personality larger than life, he lived each day to the fullest, like there was no tomorrow. Aaron was very unfortunate to face and overcome so many health challenges during his life but it made him a very strong individual, one who was tenacious, courageous and determined.
Young Aaron was small, but mighty! He wasn’t playing second fiddle to anyone and gave 100% all the time. His fighting spirit, his determination and his refusal to give up earned him respect from all who knew him on the Southern Shore and all over Newfoundland, some might even say he was a bit of a legend! Aaron gave the world much more than can be counted in dollars and cents. By his selfless response to his own misfortune of being sick a lot of his life and his conviction that the ordinary “little guy” can keep up to the bigger guys, by his commitment to fulfilling his purpose in life, he taught us all something about facing the challenge of living life to the fullest every day. Now that he has passed away, it is easy to see that he was indeed in his own way a legend, one who became a symbol of tenacity, courage and determination.
This day and age, we have an opportunity to make use of these platforms on social media to make a huge difference through fundraising campaigns. Let’s work together to make sure that Aaron’s life story continues to act as an outstanding example of the values of Tenacity, Courage and Determination for many generations to come in Witless Bay and the surrounding communities on the Southern Shore. His name and legacy will surely come up in many conversations in the future and will be a personal inspiration to us all as his determination, no doubt, was a source of amazement and inspiration.
In consultation with the Carey family, a Go-fund me page has been established in honour of Aaron’s life to create a bursary that will fund scholarships for graduates of Mobile Central High School who display values similar to what Aaron showed all his life and will be pursuing a post-secondary education in the Trades or in the field of Business and Entrepreneurship.
Aaron was never afraid to face a challenge so Jamie O’Brien, Stephen Harte and I challenge you to participate in helping us establish and maintain this bursary fund in honour of Aaron for many years to come. Aaron lived 48 years, so let’s set a goal of $48,000 as a start, to help 48 students in Mobile Central High School over the next decade or so by providing some funding towards their education. Let’s strike while the iron is hot and not let this fade as we have an opportunity here with social media to reach far and wide and let Aaron’s legacy live on.
Please donate. May his soul Rest In Peace.
