ACC Service Trip New Orleans

“We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community”                                                                                                  – Caesar Chavez

Story:
ACC (Another Course to College) is planning a service learning trip to build houses for teachers with Youth Rebuilding New Orleans. Their mission is to make home ownership accessible to all teachers in the city. We have been working hard to fundraise within our school community, but we could still use your help! Our goal is to raise $10, 000, to cover travel costs, learning based activities, lodging, and food. The experience of working together on a worthwhile cause, applying our education to contemporary social justice issues, and challenging ourselves to learn beyond the classroom will be priceless!

Who are we?
We are a group of 30 students and educators who are committed to accepting the challenge of a rigorous academic experience both within and outside the classroom. The service learning trip to New Orleans and the partnership with Youth Rebuilding New Orleans will allow us to develop skills to prepare us for college – and for life.

Our school:

Another Course to College (ACC) is a college preparatory high school in the Boston Public Schools, serving students from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods. It is dedicated to providing rigorous academics for students in a supportive environment. ACC fosters intellectual curiosity and prepares its students for college-level analytical reading and writing across the curriculum.

Why do we want to go?

Community service is an integral part of the ACC experience. Our students already volunteer through the ACC Community Service Club by providing urban families with fresh food, serving at the Greater Boston Food Bank, participating in Thanksgiving food distribution, raising awareness about depression and suicide, and hosting community day events. Our annual service learning trip builds on these local efforts by providing students with an opportunity to engage more actively in addressing society’s most pressing social justice issues.

How will the money be used?

- Flights from Boston, MA to New Orleans, LA

- Transportation to and from all destinations

- Accomodations and meal

- Knowledge based learning at the Whitney Plantation,        African American Tour of the St. Louis Cemetery No. 1,    Jazz History at Snug Harbor, Xavier University, Dillard    University, Riverboat History Tour of the Mississippi        River and MLK Day Parade

Curriculum Component:

Students will trace African American Heritage from slavery to overcoming obstacles throughout our 400 hundred years in the United States. They will spend time before and during the trip reflecting on where we are going and where we have been. More importantly we want them to ask themselves, where are you now?
