Hi, my name is Nyree. In 2009, I survived being shot in the neck, which left me paralyzed from the shoulders down. I am a full-time wheelchair user, artist, fashion designer and entrepreneur who has worked hard to remain independent despite living with constant physical challenges. Unfortunately, my current NYCHA apartment does not meet my basic accessibility needs. I do not have a roll-in shower, there are barriers that make moving safely in my wheelchair difficult, and there is not enough accessible space for my medical equipment and daily care. The apartment has also had ongoing sanitation and pest problems. After undergoing cervical-spine surgery, having a safe bathroom, accessible entrances and enough room for transfers and equipment has become even more urgent. These are not luxuries—they are necessities for my health, safety and independence. For more than a decade, I have contacted agencies and requested disability accommodations, but I still have not received suitable housing. My goal is to secure a safe, wheelchair-accessible home where I can live, recover and continue creating without my surroundings putting me at risk. Donations will go toward: • A down payment or move-in costs for accessible housing • Closing, relocation and moving expenses • A roll-in shower and accessible bathroom modifications • Widened entrances and other wheelchair-accessibility work • Safe space for my medical and mobility equipment I am continuing to pursue housing vouchers, disability programs and first-time homebuyer assistance.
