Help Us to Help Ourselves!

Help us help ourselves, is a fundraiser that is going to help our family raise funds for a "new" vehicle. Just so you know a little about our family, my husband Devin and I (Megan) are both currently full-time college students at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, in which we commute to daily during the fall and spring semesters. We are almost finished with our bachelor’s degrees! I am pursuing a career as a Registered Dietician and Devin is majoring in History. We both plan to continue our education to obtain a master’s degree, upon the completion of our current studies. We also plan to bring our knowledge back to our community to inspire those around us and to help impact the future of Surry County. We both volunteer weekly for an awesome ministry at Thrive Community Church in Mount Airy, North Carolina. I am currently the worship leader at the church (I am paid for part-time employment) and Devin is the sound technician (doesn’t get paid), and gladly accompanies me to all events at the church. I also coach cheerleading for the Dobson Eagles Little League Cheerleading organization and I mentor to the youth in the community. Our daughter Hayden is a happy and healthy 9-year-old, who will be starting the 4th grade this year! She loves to read and play video games for fun and also has a heart for helping her neighbor! If you have ever met her, you know she is always willing to help! Devin and I have been together for 7 years and approaching our 5th wedding anniversary! In addition to our list of responsibilities, we assist Devin's mother with grocery shopping and picking up her medication each month, due to her disability. As many of you have endured the inconvenience of your car breaking down, I know you can understand the amount of stress this has placed on our family. Each week we must borrow a car from someone in our family to get groceries for our home as well as his mother and deliver them to her house.

Last summer, my husband and I put all of our savings together to finally purchase our first family car together, cash in hand. $4,500 may not seem like much, but when each month you are scrapping by, you can imagine how long it took for us to save that money. It felt so awesome to have met that goal, to turn around and have the car only work for a short 7 months. We were devastated, considering we already shared a car between all of our family responsibilities and goodwill. The whole time we have been in a relationship we have shared one car. Many times, we have had to "bum" a ride just to get to church, the grocery store, or to school, because we don't seem to have the best luck with vehicles. Please know that we are not looking to purchase a brand new expensive car, but and we realize that asking for help makes us look vulnerable, but we need help so we can help ourselves and to pay it forward to others! We cannot get an additional job to help pay for a new car or even return to school in the fall, without reliable transportation. This leaves us stuck in this situation continually without seeing an end. We are desperately trying to break the cycle of poverty and have made several sacrifices to do so over the years. If you know me, you know that I am ambitious and prideful at times, even thinking about making this fundraiser page made me uncomfortable, because we like to be the ones who help others, not the other way around.

I know these times are tough for everyone right now, so we completely understand if you cannot donate anything at this time. If you could share this fundraiser with the loving people in your circle, we would greatly appreciate it! A lifted prayer and a share can be just as helpful as a monetary gift. We will be praying blessings over all those who help with sharing and donating, and we will faithfully pay tithes on the donations. God has blessed us immensely and we thank you in advance for being His hands and feet.

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
