The Abundance Setting is a new nonprofit organization that supports the advancement of working mothers in the culinary industry to have a sustainable career while maintaining a quality life at home. We do this through Meal Relief, Career Mentorship, and Networking Opportunities.
Founded by James Beard Award Winning Chefs Beverly Kim and Johnny Clark (Parachute & Wherewithall) and Sarah Stegner of Prairie Grass Cafe.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? We must confront the disparity of women in the culinary industry. It’s alarming to know that while women make up half of the culinary school graduates, we only make up 22% of lead chef/cook positions. Women are also at risk of losing any progress as lead chef/cooks due to the pandemic.
We need more gender equity in our sector, and hope to achieve this through: Meal relief, career mentorship and support, networking and resources. Our work confronts the systemic inequities that have held women back from ownership and leadership positions in the culinary industry. We also recognize and acknowledge the impact of the intersectionality of working mothers, particularly those in the BIPOC and LGBTQ communities.
ABOUT MEAL RELIEF We plan to launch our first program, Meal Relief, to support working mothers in the culinary industry by providing free, prepared family dinners by a fellow chef, delivered once a week. Our goal is to provide delicious, nutritional support for the whole family while freeing up time and saving money for the working mother.
Participating chefs will source ingredients from local farmers, and when possible, highlight female farmers in our area. We would rotate chefs that are creating the food so it would help give them a chance to eat our food without paying or taking the time to visit our restaurants.
