Abschied von Henning..

Viele von Euch wissen es bereits: im März 2021 wurde bei Henning ein äussert seltener, sehr aggressiver Tumor in der Ohrspeicheldrüse entdeckt.

Etwas mehr als zwei Jahre hat er unermüdlich und bewundernswert tapfer gekämpft, sich durch Bestrahlungen, Chemo und Schmerzen gequält während der Krebs streute und wuchs...

Auch wenn wir so ungefähr wussten, wohin die Reise am Ende gehen würde, so sind wir doch geschockt und unendlich traurig. Wir dachten, wir hätten noch etwas mehr Zeit.

Henning ‚Henk‘ Gabriel war bester Freund & Ehemann, Vater dreier großartiger Kinder (Henri, Emma & Jannik), kleiner Bruder & langjähriger Schwager, jüngster Sohn & Schwiegersohn, hilfsbereiter Nachbar und geschätzter Kollege.

Er hatte Herz & Humor, Ecken & Kanten, war manchmal unfassbar stur, aber immer zur Stelle, wenn man ihn brauchte.

Er liebte guten Wein und asiatisches Essen (sehr scharf), er liebte Essen generell! Ich kannte niemanden, der mehr Zeit damit zubrachte, sich eine Scheibe Brot zu belegen, Zentimeterdick: er nannte diese Kunstwerke immer 'Luststullen'.

Er war Kaufmann, Händler, Zahlenmensch. Er liebte seinen Job und hatte über die Jahre enge Beziehungen zu Kolleg*innen und Kunden aufgebaut, ob in Amsterdam, Singapur oder Südafrika. Er liebte das Reisen...

Er war auch Hanseat - traditionell und mit teils konservativen Werten - aber gleichzeitig weltoffen, neugierig und tolerant... und auch nach unserem Umzug aufs Land war das Herz von St.Pauli immer auch ein Stück Heimat für ihn geblieben.

Das 'menschliche Miteinander' war ihm manchmal zu viel, dann verbrachte er gerne Zeit alleine und arbeitete im Garten oder bei den Teichen, als er es noch konnte - und als er in den letzten Wochen viel Zeit im Bett verbringen musste, so liebte er es, die Geräusche und Stimmen im Haus zu hören.

Wir sind dankbar, dass wir in seinen letzten Stunden bei ihm sein konnten.

Wir hielten ihn im Arm, als sein Herz aufhörte zu schlagen.

Weil mich nun so viele Fragen bzgl. Hennings Tod und seiner Beisetzung erreichen: die Einäscherung ist noch nicht erfolgt, daher wird auch die Urnenbeisetzung im Ruheforst aufgrund der bevorstehenden Ferien erst Anfang August stattfinden (Ende KW 32).

Im Ruheforst übernimmt die Natur die Grabpflege, daher wollen wir bewusst auf mögliche Kranz - oder Blumenspenden verzichten.

Wer uns dennoch unterstützen möchte: ich freue ich mich am meisten über ein finanzielles 'Polster' für Henri, unseren Jüngsten. Henri besucht zur Zeit die 2. Klasse der Grundschule und hat Anfang des Monats seinen 9. Geburtstag gefeiert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war Papa leider schon im Krankenhaus...

Jeder Betrag geht - sicherlich auch im Sinne von Henning - direkt auf Henris Mäusekonto bei der Hamburger Sparkasse.

Wir vermissen Henning sehr.

Aber wir sind auch berührt von all‘ den lieben Worten und den Hilfsangeboten: es ist wirklich schön zu wissen, dass Henning von so vielen Menschen geschätzt und gemocht wurde. Und dass so viele an ihn - und an uns - denken.

Farewell, Henning…

Many of you already know: in March 2021 Henning was diagnosed with an extremely rare, very aggressive tumor in his parotid gland.

He fought tirelessly and admirably bravely for a little more than two years, torturing himself through radiation, chemo and pain while the cancer spread and grew....

Even though we knew roughly where the journey would end up, we are shocked and infinitely saddened. We thought we had a little more time.

Henning 'Henk' Gabriel was a best friend & a husband, a father of three great kids (Henri, Emma & Jannik), a little brother & a longtime brother-in-law, the youngest son & son-in-law, a helpful neighbor and an esteemed colleague.

He had heart & humor, rough edges, and he was sometimes incredibly stubborn, but always there when you needed him. He loved good wine and Asian food (very spicy); he loved food in general! I never knew anyone who spent more time topping a slice of bread for himself, centimeters thick: he always called these works of art 'pleasure sandwiches'.

He was a merchant, a trader, a numbers man. He loved his job and had built up close relationships with colleagues and customers over the years, whether in Amsterdam, Singapore or South Africa. He loved to travel….He was also a Hanseatic–traditional and with partly conservative values–but at the same time cosmopolitan, curious and tolerant... and even after our move to the country, the heart of St. Pauli had always remained a piece of home for him.

The 'human interactions' were sometimes too much for him, then he liked to spend time alone and work in the garden or by the ponds when he could–and when he had to spend a lot of time in bed in the last weeks, he so loved to hear the sounds and voices in the house.

We are grateful that we were able to be with him in his final hours. We held him in our arms as his heart stopped beating.

I am starting this 'campaign' not to collect donations but because I am now receiving so many questions regarding Henning's death and his burial: the cremation has not yet taken place, so the urn burial in the forest cemetery will not take place until the beginning of August, due to the upcoming vacations (an exact date has not yet been set, however, it will take place sometime in week 31/ 32).

In the forest cemetery, nature takes over the grave care, therefore we want to act consciously and responsibly toward nature, so we respectfully ask that you do not bring wreaths or flower donations.

Whoever would like to support us nevertheless: I would be most pleased about a financial 'cushion' for Henri, our youngest. Henri is currently in 2nd grade in elementary school and celebrated his 9th birthday earlier this month. At that time, unfortunately, Papa was already in the hospital....

As Henning would also have seen fit, every donation will go directly to Henri's bank account at the Hamburger Sparkasse.

We miss Henning very much.

But we are also touched by all the kind words and offers of help: it is really nice to know that Henning was appreciated and liked by so many people. And that so many are thinking of him–and of us.
