TAF Karur Women's Education Fund

The Abolish Foundation (TAF) is a Canadian not-for-profit organization based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Since 2015, TAF has been working on various initiatives to combat and help end modern-day slavery, bonded and forced labour, and labour exploitation.

On a recent research trip in India in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, TAF volunteers came across evidence of horrible abuses against young women in the state’s textile factories. Our latest initiative is the education of these women, who have been reunited with their families and whose rehabilitation is crucial. All are between the ages of fourteen and twenty, and all were rescued within the past year.

The Abolish Foundation Karur Women's Education Fund will provide assistance with school tuition, administration and enrolment costs, school uniforms, backpacks, transportation, and books and stationery. We want to help with the education of 50 young women over the next three years. The cost of this is $1298 CAD per student.

We are carrying out this initiative in partnership with READ – the Rights Education & Development Centre – a registered non-profit organisation working primarily in Western Tamil Nadu. Since its establishment in 2001, READ has helped over 8000 children, 5000 families, and 2000 women. With our help, READ’s charismatic leader-activist Karuppusamy has identified an area in Karur district wherein no previous rehabilitation program has ever been run, despite a dire need for one. For the Dalits and other exploited labourers in the area, READ’s guidance and help will provide critical support.

Our fundraising goal is made up of:
50 women x $1298 = $64,900
GoFundMe fees 5% = $3245
Card Processing fees 2.9% = $1882
Grand total = $70,027 CAD

TAF will take no money for wages or administrative costs. Donations, minus GoFundMe hosting and transaction fees, will be managed by TAF and administered by READ.

We cannot stress enough the dire outcomes for rescued slave labourers who are not given an opportunity to further their education. Many fall back into exploitative situations. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of these women.

In the video above, you will meet Kalavathy, Vidya, Ajay, and Karuppusamy. Kalavathy and Vidya are speaking Tamil; the former is a rescued cotton mill labourer with whom READ will be working as part of this initiative. Ajay is speaking Hindi, and was the subject of a previous successful campaign by TAF that raised funds for a prosthetic arm. You can watch videos and read more about that campaign here: https://abolishfoundation.com/prosthetics/ .
