First Gen College Students- Reach the Finish Line

Truth is, I never imagined I'd be running a marathon...

I've always been the kind of person who prefers to tackle my challenges in private- it feels too public and possibly humiliating to have everyone know my secret goals... but here we go!

I have been training for the Philadelphia Marathon since August, running 4-5 days per week.  I have logged in the ballpark of 500 miles and 100 hours of training.  Twice a week I run from my home to work, running through the Arboretum, across Forest Hills, and through Franklin Park.

Not once have I laced up without thinking about the Brooke Charter School alumni I support as the Director of Post Secondary Support, more than 80% of whom are FLI students (First-Generation and/or Low Income), as they pursue their goal of attaining a college degree.

I want to take this opportunity to raise funds to support their goals as I accomplish one of mine.

Did you know ...
55%  of students struggle to find the money to pay for college and 51% drop out because of financial issues.

"The percentage of college dropouts can be even higher for students who are the first in their families to attend college. 89% percent of low-income first-generation students leave school without a degree—four times the rate for second-generation students. "

For many students, even a  $200 book is an insurmountable obstacle to completing a degree.  There is no amount of $$ that will make it more likely for me to finish the Philadelphia Marathon but in fact, very small amounts of money can make a big difference in the college completion rates of Brooke Alumni and other students like them.

100% of funds raised will go directly to Brooke  Alumni in need of support.  Allocations will be given to students in a range of amounts to cover an expensive book, an MBTA pass, the purchase of a new computer, or larger one time expenses not covered through college or federal financial aid.
