Abigail Rose Elkin age 7
Spende geschützt
Tuesday afternoon, February 20, our Precious Abby Angel, 7 years old, came home from school with a fever and no other symptoms. We broke the fever with medication. She went about a typical afternoon, evening and to bed. Early morning she came to Papaw's and Mamaw's room with a fever, so we gave her medicine to break it again. She went back to sleep between us and woke hours later, aching, saying she could not move her neck and feeling warm. We gave her some medicine and she went back to sleep.
At 8 a.m. we contacted her pediatricians office and they advised us to bring her there. At the doctors office, she had no fever. She began becoming increasingly sleepy and weak. They ran a series of rapid tests all coming back negative. She began not to respond. The staff baffled and startled, took Abby by wheelchair down to the emergency room.
There, Abby had a normal temperature and they began running more tests. Her pupils then dilated and quickly she declined having 4 small seizures. She was transferred to a different room and intubated with a breathing tube to protect her airway. She then began to lose blood pressure, oxygen, and arrested. Life-saving CPR measures began. After 20 minutes, she regained a thready pulse. She was made stable only by medications and shortly after air lifted to Dell Children's Specialty Hospital in Austin from San Angelo in very critical condition.
There, in Austin, she was immediately taken to the pediatric critical care unit. They soon learned that she had global swelling in her brain, causing complete loss of oxygen to the brain, resulting in catastrophic brain injury. Kept alive with medications and a ventilator for a couple days she underwent 2 cat scans and a mri as well as many other tests. She was determined to have gone through septic shock. She had a strain of strept bacteria that had entered her bloodstream with presumable meningitis. The doctor explained that these cases are rare, very rapid, and unforseen. He went on to say they have done everything medically known possible to save her, but in her specific case, she will not be able to recover from the devastating brain death.
On Saturday, February 24, around noon Abby was pronounced with brain death. That evening, she was pronounced with cardiac death and met our Lord above.......
Abigail Rose will never ever ever be forgotten. She was loved incredibly by so so many. She will always and forever remain in all our hearts and memories until we are with her again one day.
