The Civil Disobedience Movement sweeping Myanmar is inspiring hope for the Myanmar people and allies worldwide that the military coup can be defeated.
Public sector civil servants in a growing range of professions are on strike; railways workers, air controllers and cabin crew, oil field workers, teachers, healthcare workers, miners, bank staff, ministries offices, and other governmental administrative workers are participating in the CDM and refusing to work. Unions in the private sector, such as garment and manufacturing workers, are also striking and actively leading ongoing street demonstrations.
The All Burma Federation of Trade Unions is one of the union federations in Myanmar leading its members on strike and leading the mass demonstrations in the streets. The movement against the military dictatorship needs to prolong and expand the Civil Disobedience Movement as much as possible. A large strike fund to help workers take the courageous step of joining and continuing the strikes would be ground-shifting in the struggle for democracy in Myanmar.
Please contribute whatever you can to help the workers continue this difficult fight. All funds will go directly to the ABFTU, who will distribute the funds strategically to members and non-union workers to facilitate the Civil Disobedience Movement (ie transportation to protests from industrial/residential areas, lost wages, strike materials, face masks/coverings, meals and water, etc.).
The organizers of this fund are organizers based in Myanmar but currently outside of the country, and work closely with the ABFTU. This fund has been requested and approved by the General Secretary of the ABFTU. The funds will be sent via an already tested and confirmed PayPal account to a trusted partner on the ground in Myanmar who will then pass the funds on as cash to the General Secretary. Please contact ABFTU directly via their Facebook page if you have any inquiries (https://www.facebook.com/ABFTU).
