Imagine as an elite ultrarunner that your country has only one prestigious race and that one race costs more than one year salary to enter. This is ultra running in Morocco.
Most Moroccan runners can not gain visas to visit other countries to race, nor do they have the funds. The one Moroccan race with serious competition, prize money and prestige is the Marathon Des Sables (MdS). MdS costs $3,600, has no reduced entry fee for Moroccans, and is the only way to win potentially life changing prize money and opportunities.
Abdelaziz just won the 6-day, 250Km Trans Atlas Marathon,... FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW. Every day he started with a smile, always had time to stop for a laugh and a photo, and hung out with us at dinner. And behind the easy-going demeanor is one of the most talented distance runners ever. Unfortunately, Abdelaziz will never have the means to pay the MdS entry fee and that race does not sponsor any competitors. He was only able to compete at TAM because it allows Moroccans to run for free.
Abdelaziz is so young and has the talent to win the prestigious MdS; if only he can attend. As a community, we can make this happen.
I have committed to match every donation you make until we have enough to pay the entry fee ($3,600) and transportation costs ($2,000). 5-time MdS winner, Mohamad Ahansal, has committed to coaching Abdelaziz. And Abdelaziz has committed to do all he can to win. Together, let's do this!
