Abby's urgent need: Restoring vision in both eyes

Abby Thomas, a devoted mother of two, has faced unimaginable health struggles. Born and raised in Trinidad, she has battled diabetes since she was just 15 years old. Over the years, the condition has taken a toll on her body, and in 2022, a severe COVID-19 diagnosis led to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). As a result, Abby is now on dialysis three days per week, a grueling and exhausting process that keeps her alive.

While her journey has been filled with challenges, the hardest part has been losing her vision. Abby now has very limited sight, with only partial vision in one eye. Abby is 36 years old - a beautiful person inside and out with a heart of gold and a mother to Abbion (12) and Abbanique (6), this has made daily life incredibly difficult. Simple things that many of us take for granted—reading bedtime stories, helping with schoolwork, or even just seeing her children’s faces clearly—have become nearly impossible.

Despite these hardships, Abby is determined to fight for her children. Her doctors have told her that with urgent eye surgery, she can regain her sight and once again be fully present for her children. On Friday, February 14, 2025, Abby completed her pre-surgical workup for her eye surgery in Trinidad. She is scheduled to return for a pre-op visit in three weeks, and her family hopes she can undergo surgery on her left eye by the third week of March.

In just three weeks, Abby must pay for her first eye surgery in full—an overwhelming cost of $38,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars (approximately $6, 000 USD). This amount does not include post-operative treatment or medications. An additional $38,000 TTD (approximately $6,000 USD)., plus post-operative care and medication, is needed for the second eye. The financial burden is heavy, but the chance of restoring her vision is priceless. That’s why we are reaching out to you for your support.
