Abby's Story: A Family's Cry for Help After Tragedy
My name is Abby, and I live in Jamaica. I never imagined I would be in a position where I’d have to ask for help like this. On November 16th, while I was at work, my world was turned upside down. I received several missed calls, and when I finally called back, I was told something I never expected: my house was on fire. Not just my house, but four other houses on the same land had also burned down.
On the way home, I was overcome with fear and praying desperately for my children’s safety. When I arrived, I learned that my baby was saved—an unimaginable relief in such devastation. However, my heart shattered when I found out that my sister's one-year-old baby tragically didn’t make it.
We lost everything in that fire. Not only did we lose a beloved member of our family, but we also lost our home and all our belongings. I am now left with no place to live, two baby girls to care for, and no support system to turn to. I reached out to extended family for help, but because we weren’t close, they refused.
My struggles have only worsened. My job laid me off for a month without pay because I left urgently on the day I heard about the fire. One of my children’s fathers is completely absent, and the other provides no support. I can no longer afford to send my kids to school, and we are currently without a home or basic necessities.
Since GoFundMe is not available in Jamaica, I asked someone to create this fundraiser on my behalf. It was my last hope to seek help for my children and me during this devastating time.
