On Sunday September 6th I received a call from my mom letting me know they were under level 2 evacuation which is to be ready to evacuate due to fire. The first thing my parents did was try to make sure their animals and home were safe. They spent all day watering around and on our house and my grandmas who lives next door. They secured their animals, made sure they were safe and had food and started to gather what was important to them.
The fire threatening them was 7 miles away and on the other side of the river they live on. At some point a transformer exploded and sparked a fire on their side of the river, causing a new fire to erupt. My family was given less than 5 minutes to get out. There is only one road to their house. One way in and one way out. Many houses are on this road and were placed in the same position. My mom called me as she was trying to get out. There were trees down, power lines down and the fire was right on them. They were able to get their dogs and drive out and I will never forget that call.
I am beyond grateful they are alive and made it out safe. The were able to leave with just the clothes they were wearing and that's it. Nothing else was taken due to the risk and lack of time. Within hours their house and many others were destroyed. Animals didn't survive and it is still unsafe to go back and check anything out.
My sister, who is 15 and disabled has been emotionally destroyed by this. Her whole life was in her room with her stuffed animals and toys who were her best friends. It was her safe space. She doesn't understand any of this. My parents biggest concern right now is for her and how to get her through this.
I have been overwhelmed with the amount of support and help on Facebook and through an Amazon wish list I made for Abby. When Abby was leaving the house she wanted to take her stuffed animals. She left her glasses, her headphones and her phone because all she cared about were her friends. Everyone who has reached out has made it possible to help replace the best friends she lost in that fire and we are truly so grateful.
Everyone's support has been amazing and every positive thought and prayer has gone a long way. But I have been asked by many others if they can donate or give more. If you would like to do so, I have set this gofundme up for them and for Abby for replacing items like books, clothes, and helping towards meals until they can figure out where they will land after this.
We truly appreciate everyone who has reached out <3
