My mom and my sister escaped safely from our family home with just the cloths on their back. On Thursday, January 25th, a horrific fire destroyed the inside of the house on Columbia Way. As long time Plum Island residents, our family is used to always helping others, but in this time of overwhelming need, we are having to reach out for help ourselves.
My mom, Karen Abbott R.N. is the most wonderful, caring and compassionate person I have ever met. She has worked in the Emergency Department at the Anna Jaques Hospital for 40 years. Even if you do not know her personally, I am sure that she has touched the lives of either someone in your family or one of your friends in their own time of need. After the devastating loss of her husband 4 years ago, losing the family home that they built together and all of the memories they shared in each room and around every corner, makes the loss of the house feel like she is losing my Dad all over again.
My sister, Emily Abbott is a very private person, but to know her loyalty is an amazing treasure. Although she does not have any children of her own, her beloved cat Marrilla was like her baby, always by her side. Unfortunately Marrilla died in the fire. Emily's treasured library is covered in black soot, and these losses along with the house being gone all in the same day is simply devastating to her.
They both got out of the fire with only a long sleeved shirt, a pair of jeans and one pair of shoes each. When the professional fire garment cleaner came to look through the next day, he said no clothing at all can be adequately saved. They need absolutely everything.
Clothing, personal items, kitchen supplies, bedding, housing etc. are all immediate needs at this time.
Although the house that myself, Bob and Kailey live in next door was not directly affected by the fire itself, we spend all of our family meals and most all of our time, love and laughter at my Mom's house, mainly only using our house to sleep in. My Mom's house is an extension of ours and the loss has affected all of us to such a great degree that we still can't even comprehend.
Our daughter Kailey Abbott-Bishop is a Newbury Elementary alumni, and a current 8th grader at Triton Middle School. Her bedroom here at our house only holds her bed and her cloths. All of her most treasured items were in my old bedroom at my Mom's house that was turned into Kailey's own special room there. It was filled with all of the toys she was hoping to pass on to kids of her own someday, her musical instruments and her favorite books, and so much more. It is all black and a complete loss. The memories that she made with her late grandfather are attached to most everything she lost, and she is absolutely heart-broken with a pain we just can't heal. She knows that these are all just things, but at 14 sometimes things are your security blankets and feel like your entire world.
Although insurance will help eventually, the immediate needs are so staggering financially. Any and everything you could help us with during this tough time will be appreciated more than we could ever say.
