This is Darwin, my 12-year-old rescue who has already survived heartbreak once. He was adopted as a puppy, spent his whole life with one family, and when he grew old, they returned him to the same shelter they got him from.

When I saw him there, trembling and refusing to eat, I knew I couldn’t leave him behind. He had given all his love, and now he was confused and brokenhearted. Now Darwin needs help again. A painful growth on his paw started bleeding and got infected. The vet suspects a possible mast cell tumor, which means he will need surgery, diagnostic testing, and aftercare to have a chance at recovery. Despite everything, he remains calm and gentle, and he still finds the strength to wag his tail.

I have managed to cover his initial visit and medication, which totaled around $200, but the full treatment could reach $7,000 once surgery, lab work, and recovery are included. I am doing everything I can, but it is more than I can handle alone.

Darwin is not just a dog. He is family. He is the quiet joy that waits by my feet, the soft heartbeat beside his big brother Bruno. Bruno has not left his side since this began. They are deeply bonded, and I cannot imagine one without the other.
