Abaco Parrot post Dorian Food Supplementation

The Abaco Parrot is a charismatic parrot found on the Island of Abaco in the Bahamas. The parrot was threatened by low numbers for a long time and it was feared that it would slowly disappear as other parrot populations in the Bahamas had. A lot of effort went into managing this parrot and implementing conservation measures. All this effort worked! The parrot numbers increased.
On September 1, 2019 Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco Island as a Category 5 with 185mph sustained winds. The Abaco parrot was severely impacted by this catastrophic storm. An initial assessment needs to be conducted to determine where the parrots are after the storm. During most hurricanes, the storm isn't the main cause of mortality, it's usually the lack of food (fruits, seeds, berries) in their habitat. Next, food stations will then be set up to provide the parrots with additional food sources until the vegetation recovers to feed the parrot population on the Island. Keep in mind, the Abaco parrot does not leave the island, so their food source is what is available on the Island.
The parrot relief work is being conducted through a number of organizations including the Bahamian caretakers of the parrot, The Bahamas National Trust. The residents of Abaco are having to deal with putting their own lives back together, the management of the native parrot species is the last thing that should be on their mind at this moment. This group of scientists and parrot organizations comprising this effort will lend a hand to handle the immediate needs of the native parrot. We want to make sure the Abaco Parrot is here for the locals and visitors to enjoy for the foreseeable future.
