Support Lucy for Heart Surgery

Hi, my name is Mark and I am fundraising for my Mother-in-law Lucy Karawa who had a massive heart attack on Christmas Day 2022 and has been in hospital since. This is the first time Lucy has had any heart issues and the doctors have discovered that 3 arteries are 75% blocked meaning she must have surgery to live.

My wife was in the process of changing health insurers for Lucy and both have rejected her claim meaning the bill will be all out of pocket. The hospital (Westmead public) is now asking for $25,000 upfront before they operate which is money we just don't have. The estimated total bill will be around $100,000.

We are holding out hope that today the hospital will agree to go ahead with surgery ASAP, and then we can deal with the financials later.

The frustrating part of all this is Lucy has been living here in Australia for just over 10 years with me, my wife Polly and our 2 children. Originally from Fiji, Lucy applied for residency back in 2012 and to date, we have still not heard from Immigration. So by now, you would expect Lucy would be on Medicare and then we would only be dealing with the emotional stress and maybe some out-of-pocket expenses.

For now, we will do what we can and part of that is reaching out here to try and get the money required to keep Lucy alive.
