I was born and raised in Newark, NJ by two amazing immigrant parents who came from Ecuador to the United States for a better life. Around 2011, my family endured many changes. My mom gave birth to my little sister who was born with special needs. This took a toll on my mom and which led her to have postpartum depression. A year after my sister's birth, we had some concerns regarding my mom's mental health. My family was able to convince my mom to seek treatment and was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Unfortunately, during this time the relationship between my parents was rocky which led them to divorce. My dad received full custody of me and my sister & my mom was able to have supervised visits with us.
As time went by, my mom stopped taking her medication. Soon after, we began to see my mom less as she began to travel back and forth from Ecuador. Starting 2013 the only contact I had with my mom were phone calls. In August of 2020 I received a phone call, but it wasn't from my mom. A policeman from the city of Quito in Ecuador called to inform me that he found my mom loitering outside of the airport. During this pandemic, my mom was living on the streets for a couple days without food and water with the intention of trying to board a plane to come back to the United States. Unfortunately, the situation in Ecuador regarding COVID-19 is very high which my mom isn't really aware of. My mom spent 10 years without any medication or medical help for her illness and her health worsened during this time.
As soon as I received this call, I began to make plans to come to Ecuador to help my mom restart a treatment. As of the 22nd of August I have been living in Ecuador to help my mom. Upon arrival, I found my mom living under poor conditions. I took my mom to live with me in my dad's hometown. We have been living here ever since. Thankfully, my mom agreed to receive treatment. Financially, I am swamped with the medical expenses, but have been able to manage.
On Wednesday, the 23rd of September, I received more bad news regarding my mother's health. During an abdominal ultrasound, 5 uterine fibroids were found and she is needing immediate surgery to remove them. Soon after getting this news, my mom's blood work results arrived and it showed she has Microcytic and Hypochromic Anemia. The doctor advised she would need an immediate blood transfusion for about 3 to 4 pints of blood because she has suffered a lot of hemorrhaging from the fibroids.
Unfortunately, I am currently unemployed since moving to Ecuador. Most of my savings has gone to my mother's treatment and medicine for her mental health. On top of that, I am a junior at MSU and I’ve trying my best to manage my online studies as well. I am trying my best, but still need your help. Any donation is greatly appreciated to better my mom's health.
Again, I thank you all who took the time to read this and may God bless you all.
