This is a very powerful and hopeful story about my little brother Russell Tyler Berry!
Russell Tyler Berry is one of the most incredibly talented 16 year olds I know. Not only has he accomplished so much in his youth this far, but he has goals that are most definitely going to take him to the top in life.
On Wednesday the 10th of April, 2019, Russ was admitted to Renown Hospital in Reno, where he was told the doctors had discovered a brain tumor. Russ and our whole family have been in a state of shock ever since. He is the youngest of the grandchildren to our grandparents on my moms side, and he is my only brother as well as mom’s only son. For my entire life I’ve felt so connected to my brother and I’m indescribably proud of all of his accomplishments! He is an avid snowboarder, and has boarded with some of the best. He is very skilled with all of his schooling and classes. Russ is an excellent runner and most importantly he wants to change the world when it comes to sports, health, and for people like himself dealing with these kinds of situations.
Russell’s brain tumor is one that is located in the most sensitive, and fragile parts of the brain. It is the size of 2 ping pong balls and is tucked into the very center part which is known as the cerebral cortex/ 4th quadrant of the brain. This is the area of the brain that is responsible for most of the motor functions for the face, mouth, throat, vision, and hearing. There are some risks that we have been warned about but we have done some research and are very positive and beyond hopeful about the results that will take place. It is still scary seeing as the surgery will take 12 hours, as well as there being some risks of permanent damage if anything goes wrong. Russell’s surgeon’s name is Doctor Peter Sun. He is known to be the best surgeon of all for these kinds of surgeries. The exact name of the surgery is called “CRANIOTOMY FOR RESECTION OF POSTERIOR FOSSA.” In case anyone would like to do some more research or learn more about the surgery and location of the tumor.
Our family will be expecting to learn more about the tumor within a week after surgery takes place, as that is when the biopsy of the tumor was estimated to be done. This information will tell us what stage and what kind of specific kind of cancer Russ has, as well as the exact type of tumor.
We have many many people praying and putting Russell’s name into prayer chains, groups, and being thought of at many churches in state and out of state. We also have family helping with fundraisers and are open to any ideas and help with those kinds of opportunities. Right now this fund has been set up to help with all of the treatments, surgery requirements, therapies needed, and assistance for him while he is staying home. It will also help family members who may or may not need to take time away from work to help Russ feel more comfortable or at home with his needs and on his road to recovery.
I would like to say gently, that Russell is not being covered for anything as far as insurance goes. This is why our fundraising goal is so high. We are very understanding as to what costs may come up to, as his scenario is one of the more difficult kind in nature. Please Pray about this.
On a more positive end note, Russell as always, is in optimistic, strong, and good spirits about the entire thing. Like any super athletic and light hearted man, he’s feeling cooped up and can’t wait to get out into the big wide world again but most importantly.... to be back on the mountain snowboarding.
Please join us all in being part of “Team Russ” and let’s do all that we can to put everything about this experience behind him.
