Aaron Lost His Home in Spencer, Iowa Flood
Donation protected
My uncle, Aaron Schurz lost his home in the Spencer, Iowa floods. The foundation collapsed after his basement completely flooded, destroying many of his personal belongings, including cherished memorabilia from his grandparents’ dairy farm. My family and I have started this GoFundMe to help him get back on his feet.
Aaron’s Story
Four years ago, Aaron underwent what was supposed to be a routine surgery. Tragically, complications left him with permanent nerve damage in his legs and a severe post-surgical infection that hospitalized him for weeks. Aaron currently relies on a walker and now, after four years, has been cleared to begin driving on his own again.
Dealing with chronic health conditions comes at a great financial cost. Aaron had to sell his childhood memorabilia, collectible toys, and most of his owned valuables to fund his medical bills. Despite these hardships, Aaron has always been very proud and a hard worker, making it difficult for him to ask for help.
Recently, Aaron faced yet another blow. A devastating flood in Spencer, Iowa left his home condemned due to a caved-in foundation.
He barely had time to evacuate, let alone gather his most cherished and valuable belongings from the basement. With the waters rising dangerously fast, he grabbed what he could, hopped in his truck, and fled to higher ground — stopping to pick up a few of his neighbors and drive them to safety.
Without flood insurance coverage, Aaron lost what little stability he had left. He now relies on his aging parents for transportation and caregiving, who themselves are dealing with over three feet of water in their basement.
