Our friend, John Overbye is battling cancer. His experimental medical treatment and related expenses are beyond his means. Here is his story.
"Hi, my name is John Overbye and I am a 61-year-old long-time resident of Bowen Island who has been diagnosed with a form of cancer called Mesothelioma. The doctors tell me that while my illness is terminal they can, with expensive treatment, extend my life by as many as 4 or even 5 years.
As a carpenter, I have worked on island homes since moving here in 1993 and I contacted Mesothelioma through my extensive work with asbestos. Having worked alongside so many over all those years, I am well-known to island contractors and the public at large and they will know that asking for help is not something I would normally do; I only do so now out of necessity.
While I have health coverage through Work Safe B.C., the treatment I require is a two-year program and many additional expenses are beyond what my coverage provides. Expenses I must cover include $205 payments to the clinic every 3 weeks, medications, ferry fees, gas, insurance etc. My landlady, Elaine, graciously lowered my rent but I cannot work due to my illness and to take part in the program I will need additional funds. I am hoping to raise $30,000.
I am thankful to live in such a warm community and would prefer not to have to ask for help but I would like to be a part of Bowen for as long as I can.
