"Race and racism both play a significant role in Black people's vulnerability to mental health distress and our reluctance to seek treatment." Daver Campbell
In response to the incessant police brutality and anti-blackness in America, right now more than ever the Black community is in need of mental health support. Every day the Black community is bares witness to members of their community being brutalized to death, filmed, publicly degraded, debated about; individual safety being dehumanized in real-time, on the news, online, and in social circumstances. The day to day existence of the black experience is extremely traumatizing and triggering. As the founder of Tha Sanctuary I believe healing is a lifestyle. Tha Sanctuary combines diverse healing modalities and practitioners under one roof to provide people with an inclusive space focused on holistic health and wellness. We are committed to building a community that is dedicated to changing the stigma attached to healing. With recent events I kept asking myself, How I can support my community more ? Black Lives Matter and so does Black Mental Health.
Tha Sanctuary goal has always been to address the lack of Black therapy resources, advocacy, and mental health support in Los Angeles. There needs to be a serious focus redirected towards creating safety networks for Black men and women struggling with mental health. Racial trauma is one of the biggest threats to the Black community; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I am starting this crowdfunding campaign to support mental health initiatives for the black community in Los Angeles through advocacy + Black-led healing. My aim is to raise funds to make mental health support more accessible to Black community members in Los Angeles and surround areas. My desire is to see the black community gain access to top quality mental health treatment without any strain or cost to them. We have learned from the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective that "Black people are 7 times more likely to live in areas with limited access to mental health care. There is a shortage of black mental health providers, and only a third of Black people who need mental health services receive treatment.”
This crowdfunding was created with the understanding of disparity of access for Black mental health resources; our goal is to connect members with accredited and recommended local Black counselors and therapists. With your donations, we will be providing 30+ on the waiting list directly to these resources. Black Mental Health Matters. It is important to address the potential barriers that exist within our communities in order to make sustainable change. Since there are mostly hegemonic non-black therapists in Los Angeles without anti-oppression training, itcan be alienating and unhealthy for Black communities to be seeking solace and solace and support with non-Black therapists. We currently have 15 licensed Black therapists ready to connect and provide their services to those currently on the waiting list.
❋ What we're looking to do:
Therapists will be hired to work with recipients and will be paid an hourly wage to organize communication between selected patients.
❋ The Goal:
Aiming to raise $5,000+ in order to offer therapy funds to 30 + Black folks, priority to Disabled & LGBTQIA+ folks, with 12-15 hours of therapy sessions for FREE, funded by the donations. Advocacy services will also be available for the recipients.
Applicants will be matched with a suitable therapist that we are working with. At this time, this fund is exclusive to the Los Angeles community since there is a lack of therapy services for Black community specifically. However, we will make exceptions for requests outside of this area if you are lacking resources in your area.
Thank you for your donations, your action and for helping us spread the word about the services we will be providing, particularly to those most in need!
