Chair Lift Installation

Donation protected
As most of you know, my mom, Laurie, was diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer a year ago.  Following a biopsy on the primary tumor this past spring, she lost most of her mobility to get up and around the house.  While her chemotherapy, and subsequent infusion treatments have been working well to shrink the primary and secondary tumors, the primary loss of mobility has only worsened over time.  Three weeks ago Laurie had a fall as she was being assisted on her way up the stairs to bed.  She spent five days in the hospital as an inpatient, and has been at a rehabilitation facility for the remaining time.

Laurie is fighting hard in Physical Therapy twice a day to regain mobility, but is combating some fatigue as well that doctors are having a hard time explaining.  We are hopeful that she will be able to come home this following week, but there are some necessary modifications that need to be made to the house to make it more workable for Mom as she continues to work on strength and mobility.

The greatest modification we are looking at is putting a chair lift in on the main staircase from the first to the second floor.  Their bedroom is on the second floor of the house, and there is no workable space for a private bedroom or a hospital bed on the first floor.  They are looking at setting up a recliner chair for sleeping to make do in the meantime.  Ideally, we would be able to get one of the units with hydraulic lifts that positions the rider upright at the end of the staircase, making it easy to exit the unit.  They have looked into insurance coverage, and chair lifts are NOT currently covered.

So many of Mom's friends have asked how they can help during this time.  Usually visits, meals, flowers or a quick coffee chat would be the perfect way to show you care, but Laurie is considered in a higher risk category for COVID-19, so we are having to be very careful about seeing people in person!  If you can help in any way toward the installation of a chair lift to help her move around the house and regain a sense of control and mobility when she is able to finally come home, it will go a long way to showing how much you care!

Once we are able to raise funds to have a chair lift installed, any excess of funds would be used for daily Physical Therapy in home and/or in home caregiving.

Thank you again for all of your care!
