My name is Robert Brecht. In late 2020, I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal colon cancer. It has also spread to my liver, kidneys, and bladder. Doctors have given me 6 months to live, but I'm not ready to leave yet. They say there's nothing they can do, but I'm still fighting, and will continue to fight. To do that, I need help.
First, a bit about myself. I've been a cook for the past 40 years, I've been the executive chef for hotels, events centres, and family restaurants, and spent 10 years as a General Manager. I've trained a new generation of cooks, and learned from other great chefs I've worked with. I've gotten to express creativity in new dishes and making modernized versions of the classics. I've gotten to cook for all walks of live, from families to miners up in northern Saskatchewan, even for celebrities. I've cooked for people like Alice Cooper, Blue Rodeo, Loretta Lynn (a favourite of my parents), and John Mellencamp.
In my younger years, I was a DJ playing bars and clubs all over the place, which is how I met my wife, JoAnn. We've had 3 children together, been through a lot together, and for over 30 years she's been by my side through everything. I'm not ready to leave her side yet.
The unfortunate reality of my situation is having cancer is expensive and exhausting. Due to my illness, I'm now unable to work, nor can my wife for other reasons. The cost of medication (my own and my wife's diabetic supplies), transportation, rent, household bills, and general day-to-day life is quickly adding up, and my EI is coming to an end very soon.
This is where you come in. In an attempt to extend my life as much as possible, without sacrificing quality of life as much as I reasonably can, to have more time with JoAnn, I need help. The costs are steadily rising and I can't do this alone. The money raised through this will go directly to covering medication, rent, bills, groceries, etc. I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping people can help, whether it be by donating or sharing this page, every bit counts and means a lot to me and my family.
