Elly’s Journey and Courageous Battle

For those of you who may not know My Mom (Elly Decker) was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung cancer. After feeling very fatigued for weeks and experiencing increasing chest pain, she went to the Emergency Room last Saturday, September 12th. The date of her Wedding Anniversary . During a CAT scan they discovered a mass on her right lung with multiple smaller nodules, as well as mediastinal lymphadenopathy (swollen lymphnodes in the center of her chest). This last week has been a world of emotions for my Mom and our family. On Wednesday she was seen in Boston at Brigham and Women’s by one of the thoracic surgeons. The Dr stated with the mass and lymphnodes involved she is not a candidate for lung surgery. The plan would be to proceed with chemo and radiation only. He also did a biopsy in the office due to two lumps that were discovered on her back during the exam. She has a soft lump on her right side and a hard lump on her left side. He is testing those to make sure there’s no cancer cells and possible tumor growth in those areas as well. Those results will take a week to get back.
An MRI of the brain was also ordered to look for possible growth. She has a PET scan (full body scan) scheduled today. This will show us if there is cancer anywhere else in the body. Prayers it isn’t anywhere else On Monday my Mom will undergo surgery and have a bronchoscopy done. The bronchoscopy is a camera where they go down and look and take biopsies of the mass.
My Mom faces a long road ahead, many doctor appointments, chemo, radiation, and testing. We currently are facing multiple trips to Boston where expenses for lodging, food, tolls, gas accumulate quickly. Insurance has been a challenge this last week fighting for prior authorizations for all the testing and surgery for Monday. Leaving the potential of having to pay out of pocket, adding additional medical bills and hardship.
Please help me take some of that burden off my Mom during this already difficult time in her life. Any donation is greatly appreciated.
