Hello everyone,
It has been a challenging and rough journey so far and the hardest parts is just beginning. Caden my 8yr old son has hyperplastic left heart syndrome and is needing a heart transplant. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a complex and rare heart defect present at birth (congenital). The left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped in hypoplastic left heart syndrome. With hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of the heart can't effectively pump blood to the body. Instead, the right side of the heart must pump blood to the lungs and to the rest of the body. Medication to prevent closure of the connection (ductus arteriosus) between the right and left sides, followed by either surgery or a heart transplant, is necessary to treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Caden was diagnosed with this syndrome before being born. Caden had his first heart surgery when he was 6 days old, and his second surgery 6 months later. ( his last surgery was supposed to be at the age of 4 but because he was doing so well the surgery was delayed. But now at the age of 8 ) his heart is squeezing poorly from the lack of blood flow to his heart and is in need of a new heart.
Starting next week I have to take Caden to Medical University Of South Carolina to start his first heart transplant phase. The medicine that he has to take while there his body has to accept it. If his body accepts it we will be able to return home in two weeks. If his body does not accept the medicine he has to stay in the hospital until he receives a donor.
In order to start the preparation of the transplant he has to take injections twice a day that I administer. On the 13th of January he will be hospitalized for possibly two weeks to administer the first round of medication needed for the heart transplant. If his body reacts to the medication in a positive way he will be released from the hospital. He could possibly remain in the hospital until he receives a heart if his body reacts negatively to the medication. Once he receives a heart the surgery takes between 8-10 hours to get through the scar tissue that has formed from his previous surgeries. He will be in the hospital approximately from 6-8 weeks to make sure that his body does not reject the new heart. He will also be on anti rejection medication to help his body accept the heart.
All of this is very expensive, I will be losing wages from my job. I am reaching out to ask you all to please lend a hand from your heart and any monetary donations you can give. What we are trying to raise is $25,000 which will cover medications and heart transplant procedure.
We have received so much love and support. Family and friends have been there every step of the way.
