Medical Care for Bear

Hi, I'm Liz and Bear is my 4 year old Black Lab. He's the sweetest and most gentle dog you'll ever meet, and he's super sick right now. He loves with all his heart and spreads happiness to everyone he meets. He's healed me through countless difficult times over the past 4 years and now it's my turn to be there for him. He was my COVID puppy while I worked as a nurse in the COVID-19 ICU, and he got me through every day. But now he needs help, and we need help to make him better.

On Wednesday morning, I woke up to Bear struggling to breathe. He had vomit next to him. The night before, he was running and playing at the park with me like he always does (zoomies included) so it came as a shock when he couldn't breathe because he's so healthy and young. We drove him 2 hours to find an Animal hospital that could care for him. He's been diagnosed with Pneumonia. The X-rays, lab tests, ICU hospitals stays, Ultrasounds, thoracentesis, and oxygen have been a lot of money. They say he has a good chance of living a healthy life as long as we can get him the medical care that he needs to get him through this. He will live, but it depends on us getting money to pay the bill. He now needs a CT scan and surgery to clean out his lungs and to remove whatever foreign object is in his left lung that is causing so much damage and possibly a lobectomy on his left side. The surgeon said if we can do the surgery, typically dogs do well long term after.

We are currently 4 months pregnant and just bought a home together with a big fenced in back yard for Bear to run in. Bear hasn't seen his new home yet. And ultimately, I don't know how we can afford this. Bear is still eating, smiling, wagging his tail, and happy. We can't just let him go when he could have so many more years with us and his new baby brother or sister. We want him to be there when we bring the baby home. He's our family.
