Just recently my family had the scare of our lives when my mother ‘s CT scan returned as abnormal with renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) and many tumors within her abdomen. Our world crashed, because this type of cancer is one of the most common cancers but if the cancer is burrowed deep into the tissue of the kidney the 5-year survival rate is usually between 60%-70%. She was immediately sent for several tests and to two different doctors, an OBGYN and Urologist.

THANKFULLY, SHE WAS CLEARED OF NOT HAVING CANCER!

However, the OBGYN determined there are several fibroids within her uterus. One fibroid is measuring so large it has stretched her uterus to an astounding size of 44 cm, that’s almost 16 inches or the size of a uterus belonging to a woman who is 40 weeks pregnant. The doctor would like to perform a hysterectomy and my Mom is fully on board with this. Since one of the fibroids is so big and near many organs this will be categorized as a major surgery. She will remain in the hospital for four to five days after surgery, and her recovery time will be 6-8 weeks long.

As many of you may or may not know, I have a 34 year old mentally challenged sister that is cared for and fully dependent of my Mother, which is also very costly. This will put a  financial burden on both my parents and funds will be used for medical expenses and living expenses, that will not be covered due to my mother being out of work for several weeks. In addition to the expenses that my father and I will be taking on, due to time off of work to help her recover and to care for my sister.

My Mother is self-employed as a housekeeper and a surgery of this capacity will not allow her to return to work until after 6 weeks of recovery. She does have health insurance through my father’s company but as you all may know surgery can still be very costly.

My mother is a survivor and a fighter and in the adversity of breast cancer has triumphed! Let’s show her all the support she deserves as she goes through another difficult time, she has been there for so many of us and has always accepted each person with open arms.

Every little bit counts even if it's a $1! :)
