Alexander Swiftwater McCarty, a qʷidiččaʔa·tx̌ master indigenous woodcarving professor and member of the House of Welcome Cultural Arts Center advisory board for Evergreen State college left his mark on many hearts no matter where he went. In his professional career, Alex quickly impressed with glowing endorsements from many institutions, from museum curators to fine art galleries, between Washington DC to Seattle, Oceania and New Zealand and beyond. However impressive his accumulated curriculum vitae might have become, it was always overshadowed by his gigantic personality, big hugs, and kind heart that always had extra room for more friends. As a teacher, he did much more than demonstrations and lectures. He was known to create a personal bond with each and every student, building connection and rapport as a foundation of discourse; generating a nurturing atmosphere in which his students could thrive and grow. We will always treasure the gentle ways in which Alex taught by example, and the generous ways in which he shared his vast body of knowledge.
