Bubu's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Hi! Many of you know me already, but for those that don't, my name is Roger Engle. I'm a missionary in Honduras with my wife, Katrina. We have lived in Puerto Lempira for 16 years, raised children there, (ours and more while working with House of Hope), and in general, become a part of the local culture.

Last year many of you helped us raise funds when my wife, Katrina was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme grade 4 (brain tumor) and needed immediate surgery. Her surgery was a success and she is now on chemo with no signs of further development. Thank you all for your help.

Five years ago, our 20-year-old son, Bubu, broke his arm and, since it was an open fracture, they vaccinated him for tetanus. Recently he took a spill on a dirt bike and had some minor abrasions from which he contracted tetanus, even though he was vaccinated. We don’t know how that could happen, but it did.

The doctors in Puerto Lempira, for whatever reason, did not recognize his symptoms and he was rushed, by the Honduran Military at no charge to us or Bubu, to the capital city of Honduras, Tegucigalpa. A dear friend of ours, Teresa Searcy, was very instrumental in making that happen. Our thanks go out to her.

Now that he is in Tegucigalpa, he is at one of the best hospitals in Honduras, being treated by experienced, well trained doctors who know how to deal with this disease. Dr. Aguilera, the ICU doctor, has told us this will be a very complicated and difficult time and treatment. Bubu will be at risk of his life for various reasons during his treatment and recovery. That is why the doctor is telling us he is likely to need to keep Bubu in intensive care for three weeks. At a cost of around $1700, this will come to roughly $35,700. We are believing God for a quicker recovery time, and when that happens we will end this fund raising drive with our thanks and funding met.

The question has been raised about getting him to the USA, but a medical evacuation in and of itself will possibly cost as much as the intensive care bills we are being faced with here. Some of our friends are working on different ideas to make that happen without it costing us anything or at least without it costing that much, but nothing on that front has broken yet. Furthermore, we spoke with doctors in the United States and here and we are confident in the Honduran medical staff’s ability to handle this disease as well as or even better than doctors in the USA, due to their experience. After all, they did a jam up job removing Katrina’s brain tumor. Katrina and I in our morning devotions believe we received a word for the Lord to stay where we are. We took it to mean that we should keep Bubu hear, but again, that is not the only consideration.

Friends and relatives have asked how they can quickly  and easily give us money to help. Others have actually suggested and/or requested a GoFundMe page for the cause. I am not asking, nor do I ever plan to ask for money, but if you feel led to help with this need, here is the GoFundMe page where you can easily do so. We are eternally grateful to everyone that helps with funds, prayer, or in any other way.
