Murano or Bust! Ed Schmid's Research Trip of Venetian GlassblowingEdward T Schmid/Glass Mountain Press932 Yew StreetBellingham, WA 98229 U.S.A.ObjectiveThe purpose of this trip is preliminary research into Venetian Glassblowing Masters both past and present. It is to see the island of Murano firsthand in order to accurately portray the "Mecca" of glassblowing traditions in its waning glory; by visiting studios, tool makers and current maestros, (who have been making glass all of their lives), my wish it to document their methods as best as I can.GoalsThere is no question that the influence of Venetian Glassblowing has made a tremendous impact on contemporary glass in the United States and worldwide.I wish to pay homage to the masters and their predecessors with the utmost respect possible, to honor their traditions and methods of blowing the finest glass in the world. This will come in the form of books or "booklets" story-telling the history as well as technical drawings and depictions of the process of making the artwork. The books will be hand drawn and illustrated by artist/author/instructor Edward T. Schmid in the style and scope similar his most popular books on glassblowing: "Beginning Glassblowing" and "Advanced Glassworking Techniques".SolutionThis research trip will lay the groundwork for subsequent research both in the United States and abroad, for the multi-volume book series: "The History and Techniques of Murano Glassblowing". This epic undertaking will trace how Murano got to be the global powerhouse of glassmaking for centuries to current times and conditions. It will also lead in to how that style of glassmaking made a profound impact here in the United States and points further west. I believe this history is important for students and glass enthusiasts to understand that some of these popular techniques didn't appear out of thin air. Masters from Murano, like Checco Ongara, Lino Tagliapietra, Loredano and Dino Rosin, Gianni Toso, Elio Quarisa and Davide Salvadore, just to name a few, made significant contributions to the tools and techniques that are often 'taken for granted' in our country. I think their own personal journeys with this amazing material of molten glass is the cosmic glue that binds and captivates all glassblowers and collectors around this big blue marble of ours. Funding:I'm seeking to raise $7500 to cover the costs of travel from Bellingham, Washington to Murano, Italy, room and board, and to cover the costs of living expenses and incidentals (such as sketchbooks and Sharpies:). I need a better computer or laptop so I can document my experiences and interviews abroad and be able to share that with our community. Any funds that remain after this trip will be used for book writing and publishing costs.I will be deeply grateful for any and all contributions, however large or small they may be...and I will figure out a way to reward your genorisity perhaps in words, books or glass! (I am open to suggestions for incentive ideas :)!
