James 1:27
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.
My husband Caleb and I live at the Mission in Carmen Serdan, Baja California, Mexico. The Mission is an orphanage for 15 mentally and/or physically disabled orphans, children and adults. Everyday we provide for their basic needs. We bathe them, feed them, change diapers, provide medicine, and make sure that they feel comfortable and loved always. These orphans suffer from a range of physical and mental disabilities including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, down syndrome and other forms of autism. Many of the orphans cannot speak, see, or walk on their own. Our ministry is to care for these beautiful people who are not able to care for themselves.
In 2012 I began my first season at the Mission. I spent 7 months here without Caleb. Following my time here, he spent 4 months here without me. In that precious time, we grew in the Lord separately. He was teaching us that unless we are grounded in Him first our relationship would not survive. I returned to the Mission and spent the last 9 months of our time on single staff here with Caleb. In those 9 months the Lord worked on our relationship with each other. He revealed to us what we desired in a marriage with each other and we got engaged in January of 2014. We came home to Ohio and got married on August 16, 2014.
The Lord called us back to the Mission in February of 2015. We are currently living here in Mexico and will remain here as long as the Lord wills. We are expecting our first baby in November. This has been a wonderful few years. The Mission has changed our lives in a multitude of incredible ways. Taking care of these orphans has shown us what love is. Jesus reached into our lives and saved us from ourselves, from the world. He brought us to this place where we have to be selfless and separate from our flesh. He uses the orphans and the staff everyday to reveal the weaknesses we hold within ourselves. In caring for these people, we realize how broken we are.
In January of 2016, the funding we have been receiving for the past few years will stop and now is the time for us to start knocking on doors. The Lord has brought us here in this new season of our lives and marriage together. He has gifted us with a new baby. We know that He has not brought us here to abandon us. He has always and will always provide for us. We know that the Lord is faithful. We desire to continue our ministry at the Mission. We know that this season is a season of change and growth and strengthened faith.
We pray $5,000 will be enough to cover our needs in this transition season. Your prayers and support during this tim bless us immensely. We hope our testimony is an encouragement to all. Thank you and God Bless,
Shelby Otero
