Dear GMG Union supporters,
We are so grateful for the public outpouring of love for our websites—Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Jezebel, The Root, Kotaku, and Jalopnik—from readers, watchers, listeners, angry commenters, and labor allies alike. After G/O Media slow-walked contract negotiations and failed to make proposals that meet employees’ needs, we realized there was only one solution: We are striking as of March 1, 2022.
This GoFundMe is meant to provide support for GMG Union members who will suffer financial duress from this interruption to their normal pay and benefits. All funds you donate will be disbursed on an opt-in, as-needed basis to help support all union members who require such assistance. If we raise more money than necessary to replace lost wages, excess will be donated to other strike funds.
To learn more about why we’re striking, visit gmgunion.com.
To give you a bit of background on what this bargaining process has been like: Since January 31, GMG Union’s bargaining committee and G/O Media’s outside counsel have met five times. Each time, the company’s outside counsel sidestepped and delayed, refusing to provide written counters to the union’s good-faith proposals. How can you bargain a contract when the people across the table won’t even clearly state what they’re advocating for?
We haven’t taken this choice to strike lightly, and greatly appreciate any financial support you’re willing to offer. Another way you can help support the union is by pledging not to cross our physical picket lines at the New York City offices and our digital picket lines by not reading or contributing to the websites. If you’re a member of the media and have questions about our strike, please reach out to Jason Gordon at WGAE.
Please note that this GoFundMe is organized by private union members and is not connected with The Writers Guild of America, East.
I'm Lisa Marie Segarra, GMG Union bargaining committee member and staffer at Kotaku living in Brooklyn, NY. These donations are going to the Union employees and contractors I work with every day at G/O Media. I'll be collecting these funds and then distributing them directly to all members and contractors who choose to opt-in through the payment app of their choice. The funds will be used to replace income lost during our strike for costs including rent, any debt payments, child services, and other living expenses. I will not be taking any disbursement from these funds.
