Welcome to Lucy's world!
Lucy is a 40 year old Sister, niece, auntie, and friend!
When Lucy was just 11 years old, she was diagnosed with a central nuroblastoma tumour! As you can imagine, this came as a massive blow to Lucy and our whole family!
Lucy had just started high school!
Surgery was needed and a successful craniotomy was performed, and the tumour was removed!
However, this success came with life changing results, and now Lucy would suffer seizures for life!
On the 21st February 2025 at the age of just 39 ... the unthinkable happened!
Lucy suffered a serious seizure that lasted 2.5 hours! She was taken to the critical care unit where she remained in a coma for 5 weeks. During that time, she needed dialysis as her kidneys, liver, and all organs were completely failing! She needed a PEG (feeding tube) to be fitted. This was done 27th March!
We didn't know if she would pull through, and Hope seemed glim!
However, she did what she does best and put up one heck of a fight! And moved from the critical care unit to a ward on 8th April.
Lucy has been diagnosed with a severe hypoxic brain injury, and we were told she would never be able to communicate, walk, or interact again!
Needless to say, we were devastated!
After 4 agonising months, Lucy made it to a nuro rehab hospital after we were told she wouldn't make it there! She smashed it.. and is continuing to prove them wrong and is defying odds!
Lucy is smashing it! Communicating and interacting with her trusted people, eating an adapted diet orally.. can hold her own head, still has a sense of humour, and remembers old faces .. shows emotion and compassion.. all of which we were told wouldn't happen!
Lucy really is a wonderful lady with a kind, warm, caring, funny personality and was always a little forgetful
She loves to be well kept and would always have a fresh set of nails and lashes. She adored spending time with family and friends!
Recovery from a hypoxic brain injury can continue for years, not just a few months, due to the brain's ability to rewire itself (neuroplasticity). A multidisciplinary approach involving several types of therapy often yields the best results.
So, as a family, we are reaching out for your support!
We would love to give our beautiful Lucy the best chance at creating her own "New normal" by being able to fund private therapies for her and the means to get her to the facility.
Therapies such as hydrotherapy!
Why Hydrotherapy? Well, because the benefits are unreal.
Hydrotherapy can offer various benefits for individuals recovering from hypoxic brain injuries, including improved muscle tone, reduced pain, increased mobility, and enhanced cardiovascular fitness.
The buoyancy of water supports movement, making it easier to exercise and rehabilitate affected limbs, aiding movement, flexibility, and a greater range of motion. Hydrotherapy can also be a beneficial component of rehabilitation for individuals recovering from a hypoxic brain injury, particularly in regaining the ability to walk. The unique properties of water, such as buoyancy, warmth, and resistance, can help improve strength, balance, coordination, and gait, facilitating the learning and re-learning of walking skills.
The warm water can also help relax muscles and reduce spasticity, a common issue after brain injury. Repetition is key with a hypoxic brain injury as the brain rewrites itself. Therefore, our goal is to be able to give Lucy these experiences at least 3 times a week!
Yes We would like to raise funds for private hydrotherapy sessions and physio sessions that will be on going, however alongside that, Lucy and us a family would like to share our journey, to raise awareness to people in similar situations, to inspire and encourage others to NEVER give up and spread hope.
We will never give up, and Lucy will never give up!
She will make every penny count, as we continue being her biggest advocates and cheerleaders!
Thank you for taking the time to read, and if you are not in a situation to help financially, please know you can still help and support by sharing our journey!
