Tom Muggli's Fight for Life

Hi, this page is to help the husband of my cousin America. Her husband, Thomas Muggli, 53 years old, is in the Critical Care Unit of Franklin Hospital. Tom, is one of the nicest persons you could ever meet, always willing to help his fellow human beings, a dedicated father, husband and worker. Not the kind of person you would wish something as awful as what he's going through. How did he wind up there? Long story short: A year ago he was in good health, and in May of 2014 we had a big celebration as their son, Alex, graduated from college , Tom looked fine. He had been feeling a bit under the weather, but nothing major. Then in March of this year, they called my cousin and told her that she had to go pick him up at the office as  he was throwing up and looking very sick. She picked him up and took him straight to the hospital. He was there for a week, then released. Then it happened again two more times, they decided to find out what was going on, that's when they they discovered that he had a bad case of cirrhosis of the liver, caused by something called auto-immune hepatitis. This is when the body's  own immune system starts attacking its own liver.  The doctors said that this is like a silent killer, it could have been going on for years, and by the time the person feels the symptons, most of the liver is damaged. Tom went to Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, where they told him that his liver was functioning at only 15% capacity, and they placed him on the transplant waiting list, to wait for a liver to become available for him. Unfortunately, by the system they use to place you on the list and be at the top of the list,  you must meet certain criteria, and he was deemed not to be sick enough to be at the top. He went to the hospital six more times, all because of the failing liver. Finally, this past Monday, November 2,  2015, the level of toxins in his blood rose to such a high level that he went into shock and had a seizure. My cousin and her son called 911, and they took him back, for the tenth time, to the hospital. This time his condition is critical, he's on life-support. Needles to say the medical bills are piling up, and as he had to go on disability leave, the only income coming to him and his family, are the disability checks. And as anyone knows, they give you a sum barely enough to cover the basics. His health insurance doesn't cover all the medical expenses, so that leaves my cousin and her son on a very tight financial budget.  As Tom is very much loved by the whole family, I set up this page to help raise $5,000 to help pay the medical bills that are piling up. We, in the family, all feel that this is the least that family and friends can do to support Tom, as he is in the fight of his life, as he still needs a new liver, but now must stay hospitalized until they can stabilize him enough to be able to get a transplant. And apart from all the prayers, this is another way  people who care, can show their support, his family will be eternally grateful, as these are very difficult and trying times for them.
