A young Type 1 Diabetic family friend
Donation protected
Hi! I'm Sarah Czech, a Type 1 Diabetic who has been living with the disability for around 20 years now. During my childhood, I had a couple of older diabetics in my life who acted as mentors and support for me and eventually helped me form the view I have of my disability today. Over the years, I have tried to act as a similar kind of support for newly diagnosed diabetics and kids younger than me who are first learning how to navigate the disability. I know a family through my mom who has relatives living in Kenya, and in the past year or so, one of their daughters was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Unfortunately, her family has had difficulty accessing essential medical supplies that she needs for survival. In addition to these needs, due to inadequate access to care at her previous boarding school, she is looking to start school online but does not have access to a computer or phone. Also, medical care has been inaccessible for her because a majority of hospital workers near where the family lives have been on strike for the past couple of months.
Here are the exact needs wrote out by my friend: "money for test strips and insulin, possibly a solar panel at her home so that they could have electricity to charge glucose meter etc., money for a phone, possibly a computer if they try a virtual school, regular school is too far of a walk, she had been in a boarding school but they didn't have adequate medical staff to help and she almost went into DKA (Diabetic Keto Acidosis), maybe will try to find a different boarding school with a nurse or do online school. Would need to figure out device and internet, transportation to and from town to get supplies and trying to find private doctors that are not on strike, they do not own a car..."
If do not have the means to donate monetarily, contact me and we can work together to find other ways we can build a larger care network for my friend in need.
Thank you and all the best,
Sarah Czech
