A Working Father Seeking Stability

My name is Roger. I’m a 48-year-old father of four—two grown, two still school-aged. I work full-time and take responsibility for my life. Still, a series of compounding circumstances hit faster than I could recover from, and I now find myself without stable housing after a mold displacement and dealing with two broken vehicles. I know some people believe hardship is always personal failure. Others understand that life can spiral even when someone is doing their best. I also know there are people who believe asking for help is weakness. I don’t share that view. I’ve had to ask for help before in my life, and each time it was used to keep moving forward—not to stop trying. I also know this about myself: I’ve never hesitated to help others when I was able. I believe mutual support is how people get through hard seasons, not something to be ashamed of. Transportation has become the biggest bottleneck. Without a reliable vehicle, everything becomes harder—maintaining employment, securing housing, and regaining stability. When you’re constantly putting out immediate fires just to survive, it’s nearly impossible to fix the larger problems that would actually change the situation. I’ve been living moment to moment like this for several months+. Fixing my vehicle doesn’t just solve transportation—it creates a path forward. I’m a painter and preventative maintenance technician by trade. With a reliable car, I can continue working and take on small independent painting and pressure-washing jobs to stabilize my income. This turns short-term help into long-term sustainability. This situation has also limited how present I can be for my children and how much I can contribute as a co-parent. Their mother and I have a strong, healthy co-parenting relationship, and I want to preserve that and show up the way my kids deserve. I’m not asking for luxury or a handout. I’m asking for help breaking through a bottleneck—where steady effort alone isn’t enough, and a small amount of support can create lasting change. I already know how to fish. I just need help getting the fishing pole back in my hands. When I’m back on stable ground, I fully intend to keep paying that support forward—just as I always have, in whatever ways I’m able. Thank you for reading, for caring, and for any support you’re able to give. I don’t take help lightly, and it will not be wasted.
